Background
While Hongkongers claim to be "food experts", they are among the most wasteful people in the world. Every day, 3,600 tonnes of leftovers are dumped in the city; among the four Asian Tigers, Hong Kong has the highest municipal food waste per capita.
Not only is leaving food a waste of the delicacy itself, but it is also a waste of water, land and farmers' effort used in growing the food ingredients – not to mention the energy consumed by transporting and cooking them.
World Food Day falls on 16 October every year. To raise public awareness over the food waste problem, Friends of the Earth (HK) is organizing the "Wasted Treasure" Photo Exhibition between 19 October and 2 November. Masterpieces from three renowned local photographers Water Poon, Chan Dick and South Ho will be exhibited along with the winning entries of the "Cherish Food, Cherish the Gift of Nature" Photo Competition. Together, they hope to prompt local people to reflect on the food waste phenomenon.
